marietheunready is 60 by 80m cm on wood A struggle in many ways, it looked great as a sketch which made gathering up the guts to paint it take a week or two. I see a heap of contradictory meaning in this one, some of which I'm a bit uncomfortable with. There's definately a bit of the voyeur in here. I kept thinking of the moment when you're looking at your partner and thinking wow, she's real, she breathes. Somehow that rather physical response can be more surprise than the mental stuff. By the time you get to know someone that well, you have usually spent rather alot of time both aprreciating and navigating each other's emotional landscape. Suddenly you discover, rediscover, or confirm that this person is an animal too. All that said, the initial intention was the idea of having nothing to do, nothing you can do while something potentially very serious was going on. Marie Antionette is remembered for being flippant and playing games while her nation revolted. In honesty that was probably the best she could do.
