knightvark

knightvark is A3 on paper, 2021 A post by Elspbeth Guthrie about bad horse drawings and a chat with Martin Page about knights prompted me to do this sketch. Horses and Historical accuracy are both huge challenges, and I've missed to degrees with both. My current mindset sent me towards Norman knights, who I find hard to admire both for their involvement in the history of the UK and in the crusades. I was definately thinking Dirleton with the backdrop but then went to thinking tower houses within a more modern castle shell wall. In reality I suspect these castles were whitewashed when they were inhabited, but I know and like the sandstone rough brickworks that is visible now. His armour is too heavily plated for the time, and his horse, if it isn't too small full stop places him firmly in the UK. I think I managed to avoid the aardvark syndrome, but it's still not the best horse.
