thegodslaugh
The gods laugh, painted in 2019 on canvas 80*60cm.
Cultural appropriation has recently become a catchphrase and highlights alot of really potentially hurtful stuff.
But while it alleviates rightful pain, I fear it may cause worse in the long run.
I've never been a "white raster". Not since I was about six, and then only for an afternoon at a guess.
When this was the rage, my criticisms were the same as what I currently hear.
If you're not there, in it, you can only grasp a very primitive understanding of another culture.
The simple fact that I've never met a bear, or a wolf made original american shamanism out of reach for me too.
However, these characters who embrace another culture should be appreciated in my opinion, even if they get it comedy wrong.
I also suspect that a culture above the critique of stangers is a culture vitally flawed.
I suspect that the little white kid who does rain dances grows up to be the adult willing to entertain the concerns of people from another culture.
Here, Old Man Coyote and some friends from other places watch a blonde kid do a raindance.
Amused, yes, impressed, no, offended, never.
